OVERVIEW -- LOCATION -- AGENDA
OVERVIEW
Please attend this workshop to learn about:
• How Grocers can most effectively dispense surplus foods and thereby reduce associated disposal costs.
• How Food Banks can increase the amount and efficiency of consumable foods received.
• Composting and other options for surplus food.
• Regional and national trends in surplus food recovery.
Food scraps make up a significant part of our waste-stream yet less than 3% is diverted from landfill disposal. To increase the amount of surplus consumable foods provided to food banks and non-consumables to composters, the Institute for Local Self-Reliance (ILSR) and partnering organizations are conducting a one-day workshop to help increase food recovery.
Professionals in the grocery, retail, food bank, composting, and associated government agencies should plan to attend. This workshop will include sessions on best practices with respect to managing surplus food and updates on regional and national food recovery trends.
Featured speakers include representatives from the Pennsylvania Food Merchants Association, PA Recycling Markets Center, Feeding America, PA Department of Environmental Protection, Food Bank associations, Grocers, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and other leaders in this field.
The US Environmental Protection Agency is providing funding and technical support for this workshop.
The $30 registration fee will cover lunch, refreshments, and related expenses. Scholarships are available if needed. Contact Linda Knapp (lknapp@ilsr.org) for more information.
LOCATION
The Workshop will be held at the Capital Union Building (Room 210), corner of College Avenue and O Street, on the Penn State Harrisburg Campus. For more details, check out the campus map.
